about

A friend once told me he didn't like a song because "nothing happened" lyrically. The artist didn't resolve the conflict. They finished where they started, or somewhere nowhere near a comfortable ending. I think it left an uneasy feeling in my friend's stomach, the feeling of wanting the resolve and not having it appear.

I don't think these songs, individually, represent that exact uneasiness, but I think all of them together do. The idea I had when I decided to work on this was fairly simple: I would wait for the sun to set, turn the lights off, light two candles, write whatever came to me, and find the sound to accompany the words. In some ways, I can see somebody looking at this and thinking it's lazy. I think it's actually two things: 1 extremely vulnerable, and 2 extremely honest.

These songs are almost journals, but I never write short journals, so they're closer to excerpts from all of the hoopla that is my brain. I like to think that my voice and the chords and notes I use are pieces of the journal in their own way.
